Take it easy, red wolvesBy Ian Feather (Assistant Editor)
It’s hard to both believe and accept the fact that my time with the Ridge Review has come to a close. The past year has been a learning experience in several forms, and a fun one at that. During my time on the staff, I’ve had the opportunity to learn new journalism skills, talk to interesting people in and around Hillsborough, and develop bonds with members of the staff that will last for a very long time. I’d like to thank several people who have been very important to me on many levels over this past year: Sam Higgins for convincing/forcing me to join the Ridge Review staff, Izzy Allen and Briley Tankard for always making time go by a little faster during 4th period, and Ms. Stephenson, who somehow put up with me for so long. While the members of the Ridge Review staff change with every passing semester, one thing seems to always remain the same--the staff of this newspaper is a family. Although it’s not uncommon for tensions to run high, especially when it comes time for editing, I haven’t felt any more at home in any other classroom than in Ms. Stephenson’s during 4th Block. I want to encourage anyone reading this to not only keep reading the Ridge Review and similar print publications, but also for you yourself to encourage anyone you may know to do so as well. It’s imperative that objective information on current events remain easily available to the public, and in my opinion newspapers are the way to deliver this information. While the popularity of the Ridge Review has declined in recent years, it was always nice to know that I was writing for a paper that puts so much emphasis on journalistic excellence. Without a doubt, the Ridge Review is the best newspaper out there. On Being eighteenBy Isabelle Allen (Editor-in-chief)
Voting in local and national elections and purchasing lottery tickets and fireworks are just some of the exciting things one can do when the big 1-8 rolls around. However, there are a couple of important legal matters that transpire when one reaches young adulthood. Being eighteen, while an exciting time, also means reaping the not so wonderful benefits of being an adult. Some of the mundane and tedious responsibilities that come along with being an adult include being eligible for jury duty, as well as being responsible for paying taxes. In addition, young men are required to register with the National Selective Service, a service in which young men who sign up are placed on a military draft, in case of a national crisis. It’s important to know that young men will not automatically be inducted into the military. It will only be required in a crisis where reenacting the draft is necessary. Keep in mind that now that you’re an adult, you will be charged as one. Reckless nights with your buddies will no longer be deemed innocuous by the safety net of your parents. What used to be seemingly harmless criminal accounts such as TPing a house or taking road signs can now land an 18-year-old with an impending charge and jail time if the crime calls for it. Your actions will now directly come back as consequences. A serious talking to from a police officer, or dropped charges are now unlikely ramifications. A more positive legal matter that occurs when one reaches 18 is financial privacy. Your bank accounts can be just as private as your parents. However, it may be a good idea to continue sharing access to said account as your parents wouldn’t be able to drop in some extra cash every now and then, which can be a total buzzkill if you’re heading off to college. Regardless, turning 18 is a huge milestone. You’re free, legally speaking, to get as many tattoos or piercings as you please. You can vote, skydive, and be prescribed medicine without parental consent. You are now in complete control, which can be both unnerving and tranquilizing. While it is indeed an alarming thought that your adult life is rapidly beginning, it is refreshing to some to acknowledge that their life has truly just begun. |
the deflate gateBy John Williams (Staff Writer)
On Sunday January 16, after the AFC Championship game, It was reported that 11 of 12 balls were deflated during the Patriots vs. Colts game. The New England Patriots starting quarterback, Tom Brady, was asked whether he told the ball boy to deflate the footballs after the officials pregame inspection. "No, I didn't. And I haven't. And I never will." said Brady. "I pick 24 balls, that's what I pick. Whatever happened after I did it, and whatever the situation was where they measured them, I have no idea about any of those facts.”The Patriots went on to the Superbowl and on Feb. 1st beat the Seahawks 28-24. With this victory,Tom Brady will be joining NFL Hall of Fame inductees Joe Montana and Terry Bradshaw by winning four Super Bowl rings. Theatre Company hosts first ever dinner theatre
